DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM)

DKIM is a method for associating a domain name to an email message. It is used to allow domain to verify it is the sender of an email message. DKIM requires a dedicated IP.

Shared IPs

All of our shared hosting clients that do not have SSL installed are on a shared IP.  For a shared IP the primary domain for that IP is the one that DKIM is setup for and all sites on that IP share that primary domain.  This domain is only seen in the hidden email headers and not easily visible to the email recipient.

SSL Certificates

When we install an SSL certificate we have to put the domain on it's own dedicated IP.  If the DKIM setup is not purchased for the new IP then we use the primary IP on the server that does have DKIM setup as the sending IP for the system.

Dedicated Servers

DKIM is setup for the primary IP when purchasing a dedicated server installation from us.  However, we charge for additional IPs/domains that need DKIM setup.

How to See if DKIM is Setup

-To check send a test email from that domain then check the header of the mail ,then search for this line in the header that looks like this:

X-DKIM: OpenDKIM Filter v2.4.1 cl-t076-031cl.privatedns.com 4B775A807BC DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=asiteexample.com; s=default; t=1369086585;

if you see this line in the header then this means that DKIM is already setup for the domain

Do It Yourself for Dedicated Servers

To setup DKIM follow the steps below:

1) Go to the Servers page and click the server you want from the list of your servers.

2) Edit the rDNS with your hosting company for the IP, It should be the domain name, So, the domain name will be listed as both title and as rDNS.

3) Check if the DKIM is already setup for the domain. To check send a test email from that domain then check the header of the mail ,then search for a line in the header that looks like this:

X-DKIM: OpenDKIM Filter v2.4.1 cl-t076-031cl.privatedns.com 4B775A807BC DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=asiteexample.com; s=default; t=1369086585;

If you see this line in the header then this means that DKIM is already setup for the domain

4) To setup the DKIM for the domains which it isn't setup on edit the ip then at the bottom of the page you will find a link "Setup DKIM" click on it.

5)  From inside Putty you can use these commands to control/check DKIM:

/etc/init.d/opendkim restart
/etc/init.d/opendkim start
/etc/init.d/opendkim status

- Normally all you need is the restart command. If restart not working, then stop it, kill it to make sure stopped, and start again:

/etc/init.d/opendkim stop
killall opendkim
service postfix restart
/etc/init.d/opendkim start
