Question Since members can only belong to one membership at a time does this mean that I cannot collect multiple monthly subscription payments using this system?
Answer
You can do one monthly (or annual, etc) subscription per a member (unique username/email). So if a member purchases Silver for $10/mo then later upgrades to Gold for $20/mo they would no longer belong to the Silver membership. This limitation is regardless of if using direct payment or not.
However, there is the External Billing Tool which allows you to setup additional products. These products can be anything, and are typically used for either upsale, or merchandise being sold. Your situation sounds like you are wanting to upsale your members to purchase additional products and this appears like it would be the best solution. Also, with external billing, you have the option to have each product have it's own genealogy and commission structure (so for example, if you only want people who buy the product to be able commission from members they refer that purchase the product). You can also choose to either allow only members to purchase the product (like if doing an upsale) or to allow anyone to purchase a product (like if selling merchandise).
